5 iPhone Apps for Cheaper Calls

Making calls on your mobile is usually easy and costs next to nothing if you’re calling locally. But when you’re traveling, you might find your wallet being sucked dry by excessive roaming charges. To prevent this from happening, here are 5 great iPhone apps that will help you save on local and international calls when you’re on the move.

Skype – You probably heard about Skype until now and their software that make it easier to voice and video chat with your friends. If you want to take Skype on the road, the iPhone app enables you to call other Skype users for free, chat with them or talk face-to-face. And, if you don’t have WiFi access at any time, you can connect to one of Skype’s 1 million global hotspots and pay for it through Skype credit.

Tango – Similarly to Skype, Tango allows you to place free audio and video calls to other friends on Tango that installed the app on the mobiles or PCs. It’s simple and easy to use, plus it finds the friends in your address book that have already installed the app. Generally, it’s advised you use this types of apps on a WiFi connection since calls through a 3G network can get very expensive if you don’t have an unlimited data plan.
Nobel Dialer – Developed by Nobelcom, one of the leading phone card providers, the Nobel Dialer app uses Nobelcom’s services to allow you to make international calls cheaper than your regular provider. As opposed to Skype and Tango, with the Nobel Dialer you can call landlines and mobiles, regardless the application is present or not. The app calls a local access number, logs in and calls a contact in your agenda. This way, you get international calls at local rates.

Talkathone – This particular app lets you make free calls via 3G or WiFi by making use of Google Voice’s backbone. Furthermore, Talkathone has been integrated with Facebook, making it possible for you to call your Facebook friends via VoIP. The glitch, however, is that the friend you’re calling also needs to have Talkathone installed for this to work.

NetTalk – If you’re in US or Canada, the NetTalk app is a great thing to have since it provides free calls to these two countries. It works over 3G, 4G, Edge and WiFi and can also record your conversations for you. The mobile app is designed to allow free calls to users who signup with NetTalk but isn’t assigned a number and cannot receive calls. For that, users need to sign up for NetTalk Duo, a paid service that connects directly to your router.
